In what’s been one of the year’s closest races thus far, “Chronicle” has edged out the competition while making its way atop the box office over the weekend of February 3-5, 2012. The Josh Trank directed drama/sci-fi motion picture took home an approximate $8.6 million on Friday and another $10.3 million on Saturday while pacing towards a pack-leading $22.2 million total. Just slightly behind “Chronicle” is Daniel Radcliffe’s new movie “The Woman In Black,” which spooked up an estimated $8.3 million and $9.8 million on Friday and Saturday, respectively, while projected to end up with $21.5 million during its first weekend of release. Rounding out the top five at the box office in estimated weekend totals are last week’s winner “The Grey” ($9.8 million), followed by the Drew Barrymore / John Krasinski starring whale tale “Big Miracle” ($8.5 million) and Kate Beckinsale’s “Underworld: Awakening” ($5.8 million).
